About suziegilbert
I live in New York’s beautiful Hudson Valley and have been rehabbing birds for over twenty years. I’ve written a memoir about the slippery slope all rehabbers eventually slide down, “Flyaway: How a Wild Bird Rehabber Sought Adventure and Found Her Wings,” published in 2009 by HarperCollins; a children's book, "Hawk Hill," published in 1996 by Chronicle Books; and a road trip thriller, "Unflappable," published in 2020 by Perch Press.
I also write all kinds of freelance content. Please see my website, www.suziegilbert.com
Reminds me of the time a rescuer brought to us a small cryptically colored egg they found beneath a large tree in their yard. It was immediately put into an incubator. I was thinking maybe warbler egg, and went looking for the Collins book to help with the ID. But then one of our shelter volunteers decided to test it by licking. It turned out to be a Sweet-Tart candy egg.
Hi Dennis,
LOL – you really have brave volunteers!
You have a great website, by the way – readers should check this out!

Thanks, Susie — we do have a good group. When people ask me what sort of rehab work I do, I say “Killdeer”. They don’t know whether I’m good for birds or bad for mammals.
Ha ha ha – I can imagine the looks on their faces!
You must be good for birds … killdeer ain’t easy!
